Trip to Tormach

We took a trip up to Tormach, a Waunakee company whose mission is to provide “geeks with tools” including CNC mills, lathes, 3D scanners, (and it looks like coming soon injection molding) etc – http://www.tormach.com/

They have a great training facility:

They had a nice looking ironman bust that was machined using their 4 axis CNC mill (finished left, roughed right):

An of course a few cabinets full of billet aluminum/plastic/steel parts:

One thing certainly worth stopping over for (if you’re not in the market for any heavy iron) is the blog, Andy is up to some ridiculous stuff I figured I’d only ever see in our shop, like scrambling an egg with a CNC. . .

Of course they can’t send us home empty handed šŸ™‚

Red Bull Creation: HACKED

We got our invite Red Bull mystery box late (as in yesterday), we just opened it this afternoon, but we had it hacked within a few hours, thanks to aĀ diligentĀ and creative posse.

The diligent posse.

Week in Updates

Joe was featured on Thingiverse for a revision of a popular printed gear heart:

A epoxy coated beaded spool table was sanded down to get a nice rounded off edge:

Work began on the electrical solution to a bicycle blender for Dream Bikes:

With the mechanical contingent’s blender design already nearly finished:

The mill was caught “making chips” for a new 4’x4′ router/cutter build in progress (and the machine shop was busy):

The pathway towards enlightenment (or maybe just a better system of learning) was being plotted out on the giant whiteboard:

Lots of learning in the TIG welding class:

The Makerbot was kept busy creating clones of itself by printing more Wade’s Extruders:

And more importantly, a Victrola horn for the iPhone4:

The Victrola horn led to some experimentation with ABS glue, also known as acetone with dissolved ABS bits which works remarkably well:

A little flame goes a long way when it comes to testing out a new gas fired kiln for aluminum casting:

Alex stopped out with a Mandli Communication’s survey van to pick up some electronics components we stock:

We finally got back into the swing of casting, with the casting cart complete and a new smaller kiln to accommodate up to 10# pours we’re ready to go:

Week in Updates March

Yet another week has flown by:
Joe’s taken the time to document a few of the prints from Thingiverse.

And the MakerBot is now rocking some lights and a teflon coated nozzle so we can see what’s going on:

And lastly, Rick has some great pictures from the last MakerBot session.

Scott brought in the fruit carbonating chamber, and with some tweaks and a spare regulator we were a regular fizzy fruit manufacturer:

While the oranges appeared unchanged, the grapes very clearly caught CO2 under the skin and the blueberries exploded as they were depressurized. We were using a standard CO2 tank with a regulator capable of 120psi output. Leaving the cold fruit in for 30 minutes resulted in a nice bite.

Lenses were cut for a modified Mag-Lite dive light which turned into a full on Mag-Lite modification mission:

Note the shortened and rethreaded Mag-Lite body:

Backpack strap hacked to allow set positions using some rivets:

Finally got the Xbox Kinect working great:

Lastly, an attempt at ferrofluids:

Here’s some real giant neodymium magnets:

High Speed Camera

One of the members owns a Casio EX-F1 that can shoot 600 and 1200 FPS video so of course we were hunting up things to shoot in slow motion:

One of the most interesting was watching the Makerbot jump all over the place with lots of wobble while “smoothly” printing:

Watching the soda machine:

Week in Updates – March

This week we saw a lot going on at Sector67:

Monthly meeting welcomed a professional locksmith to talk about locksmithing:

Which inevitably turned into: “locks huh, interesting thought . . .”

I wonder if I can get into this door. . . [yes, about 30 seconds]

They brought along some generic Master lock paddle locks, we broke out the lock class bin and had some fun with the “confidence builder” locks:

Significant work on the Makerbot has led to progress finally, we’re able to print and entire raft of parts unattended: (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:973)

We also started playing with support material, testing things out on a WOW riding turtle model:

All this Makerbotting was capped off with a meeting of the local minds through the newly formed Southern WI 3D Printer group:

The USGS terrain data->models was roughed out on the CNC mill, looking towards a grand canyon model a little later next week:

An ancient still in box TRS-80 went under the knife to wire around the RF modulator giving true composite output:

It was time to break out an old school tool that was just right for the job:

I believe we also set the record for earliest ever hackerspace opening on a Sunday morning when a seed starting workshop was setting up at 8am. . .Lastly had a great opportunity to visit and tour the Trek plant in Waterloo, WI to poke around their R&D department [of which I obviously couldn’t take any photos, sorry šŸ™ ]

And besides showing wonderful hospitality, they didn’t send us home empty handed:

3D Printing at the Discovery Center

I had the opportunity to head over to the Discovery Center this week to check out their 3D printing facilities. They have a SLA, FDM and are looking into an SLS machine.

In the lobby of the new building are a number of cool 3d models demonstrating a variety of capabilities:

Poking around a little further into the labs reveals a full dinosaur on a print tray ready to be cleaned up:

and of course a whole pile of parts awaiting assembly:

I’ve never seen a server room without a torn apart desktop or two sitting around:

End of February Update

February cruised on by with a number of cool happenings around Sector67! We now have a 10 seat computer lab set up to teach our first Solidworks course and an Arduino 102 DC Control class.

Of course we’ve been repairing LCD monitors like mad to get the lab up and running – oddly enough this was the result of the 120V hot contacting the back of the case resulting in the solder vaporizing until connection was broken, behind the fuse. Very easy to fix, oddly enough absolutely nothing wrong but a pad to resolder together and back in service!

A number of cool projects coming together:

A rolling casting preparation workspace is being constructed to make setting up sand casts much easier:

CMKT4 drove up to teach a circuit bending course. After a little electrical theory:

Participants dug in:

And left a few mementos:

Second ever game night (4th Saturday every month):

A simple but highly effective laser scanner was assembled from a simple webcamera coupled with a photo laser level:

A roundabout dog was built and deployed (and subsequently disappeared):

The Great Internet Migratory Box of Electronic Junk migrated its way to Sector67. We’ll be swapping out parts and sending it on its way shortly – anybody outside of WI interested in receiving it?

Lastly, Joe brought in his high speed camera to see if we could capture anything interesting at 1200fps (conventional is 30fps):

After the halogen worklight wasn’t bright enough, a stage light was sourced (complete with a 3 meter spontaneous combustion warning label) and aimed at the makerbot:

To keep from melting the Makerbot they had to give it an occasional rest while it cranked out great looking parts:

ReMade Documentary Crew – Electromagnate – Stops In

Sector67 was happy to host the folks from Electromagnate for a wonderful Saturday evening.Ā  They’re currently touring hacker/maker/etc-spaces nationwide to capture the idea of the Maker Movement and share it everywhere.

Their story is especially interesting as the _entire_ project is donation/Kickstarter funded, they asked for $10k to film and ended up with over $17k just through Kickstarter – demonstrating the true nature of this community!

Mike (from DHMN) captured the moment they arrived on the webcam:

Build Madison Summary

Thank you to everyone who made it out to the first Build Madison.Ā  For those of you just learning about the competition, the idea of Build Madison is to motivate people to build something they’ve been thinking about, to sit down and really do it in just 24 hours.

They just posted all of the summaries on the Build Madison website.

Lots of people showed up, had a great time, and are waiting for the next opportunity to build some great products in a short time.
