Sector67 recently hosted an Xbox rework and BGA chip soldering class.<\/p>\n

The ball grid array (BGA) is\u00a0a “type of\u00a0surface-mount\u00a0packaging used for\u00a0integrated circuits. BGA packages are used to permanently mount devices such as\u00a0microprocessors.<\/a>”<\/p>\n

In Xbox 360s, the infamous “red ring of death<\/a>” is often the result of a soldering failure by BGA-mounted graphics card.<\/p>\n

Soldering a BGA is tricky business and cannot be done by hand, instead calling for the precision of a temperature controlled soldering machine.<\/p>\n

The infrared BGA rework station for soldering is a Jovy Systems RE-7500 model.<\/p>\n
