I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of this brand or had any thoughts about this ones specs? Seems like a decent price. I don't know enough about scopes to buy one on ebay, so I was thinking about getting a new one.

This is where I heard about it.

That scope looks like something you could definitely get started with, if you take a look at the Rigol scope I posted about the otherday it's pretty similar.

The Rigol scope has a smaller screen (5.6" versus 8" on this one), but for the extra $100 it has twice the bandwidth out of the box and a much higher sample rate, the other bonus is you have an army of people owning and working with them so at least if you have trouble you have other people to lend a hand. The other bonus is it seems that you can increase the sample rate to 100MHz with a very simple modification, to turn it into a ~$700 scope.

Either way, if you're just getting started by buying your first scope you'll find that they're both probably equally functional. If you're on a budget you can always look around on Craigslist and buy something around here, you probably aren't going to find a digital scope with an LCD and lots of features for that price, but you can get 75% of the usability for ~$50 if you just need to be able to see waveforms/phenomena without all the nice features of a new scope.

Just my $0.02 :-)

I would prefer to buy the Rigol, even used. I've heard positive things about them, but right now, I can't swing the extra $100. Thanks for the craiglist idea, I hadn't thought of that.

Have you seen this vblog? http://www.eevblog.com That guy makes me laugh but also manages to do some good hardware reviews. Most of the time they are way out of my range.

My criagslist post scored me a Textronix 561A for basically free. It doesn't have a power cord and hasn't been calibrated for a long time, but the last time it was on, it was working. Not exactly cutting edge being that its 40 years old, but its a place to start.
It's pretty similar to http://cgi.ebay.com/Tektronix-type-561A-oscilloscope-w%2Froller-_W0QQitemZ360243089406QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20100315?IMSfp=TL100315139010r29765. It's modular and the extra modules in the lower part of the stand are different from mine, but give me plenty of spare parts to work with should I need them.
Thanks for the suggestion!
