DISCLAIMER: I don't know anything about this event and am not organizing it, all of the things covered below you could ask any of the programmers floating around S67 specific questions and somebody could help you out, but if you want a broad overview and a 3 day event see below:

It says general public, I think we could overwhelm them though as those rooms only hold a 150-200 people total :-)

**************

After the successes of previous bootcamps (UNIX, C++, and Python) The Hacker Within is excited to announce that registration is open for the Software Carpentry Bootcamp. This bootcamp will cover tools helpful for developing, organizing, managing, and distributing software. It will be held on January 12-14, 2011 and will be open to all faculty, staff, graduate students, undergraduate students, and members of the public interested in producing and developing scientific software of any magnitude.

We're also delighted to announce that we'll be joined by Professor Greg Wilson of software-carpentry.org upon whose curriculum this course is based. The bootcamp will take place on January 12th, 13th, and 14th from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm in 1800 Engineering Hall. Registration is completely free, so please fill out the registration form (http://tinyurl.com/2wq6em9) to sign up.

What is the Software Carpentry Bootcamp?
The Software Carpentry Bootcamp is a peer taught workshop that will walk students through hands-on examples to supplement Greg Wilson's Software Carpentry Lectures. Professor Wilson's curriculum covers many topics essential to a scientific computing workflow. Those covered by the bootcamp include :

The Shell
Version Control
Text Editors
Databases
Web Programming
Automated Documentation
Build Systems
Unit Testing
Debugging

A three minute introduction to Software Carpentry can be found at the Software Carpentry Website.

Who should attend the Software Carpentry Bootcamp?
Students from all disciplines and at all university levels are welcome to attend. The material will be particularly useful for UW students who are or intend to be involved in academic research that relies on computation. Students interested in attending the bootcamp should go to the Software Carpentry website and watch Dr. Wilson's lectures on the topics listed above (the shell, version control, etc.). The first lectures on the shell can be found at http://software-carpentry.org/blog/shell/. Please don't hesitate to leave constructive comments and questions. Then, be ready to join us on January 12th to try some hands-on exercises to test out your new knowledge.

When is the Software Carpentry Bootcamp?
The bootcamp will take place on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday January 12th - 14th from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm. There will be short breaks every hour and a break each day for lunch.

Where is the Software Carpentry Bootcamp?
Due to room availability constraints, the bootcamp will be held in two adjacent rooms in Engineering Hall on the UW campus.

January 12th - 1800 Engineering Hall

January 13th - 1610 Engineering Hall

January 14th - 1800 Engineering Hall

Where can I find more information?
Details are available at http://hackerwithin.org/thw/plugin_wiki/page/bootcamps. You're also welcome to contact hacker.within.admin@gmail.com with any questions.

See you there!
