The Rosetta@home project determines 3-dimensional shapes of proteins in research that may ultimately lead to finding cures for some major human diseases. Rosetta helps efforts aimed at designing new proteins to fight diseases such as HIV, Malaria, Cancer, and Alzheimer's.
I presently have two machines up in the loft at Sector running Rosetta@Home 24/7 on 6 Intel Xeon processors, 12 HyperThreaded "cores." You can hear them slaving away at full steam if you listen carefully in the shop. Adding these machines to my existing arsenal of protein folders at my apartment have given my performance a boost as you can see by the chart below. Thanks to Sector's co-location space and electrical hookup, we're now the heaviest cruncher on the UW-Madison team!
