There are a couple of medical isotope manufacturing facilities proposed in Rock County. They use small particle accelerators that fuse hydrogen releasing neutrons to irradiate an aqueous solution of U235. The unstable uranium breaks down into lighter elements and the Molybdenum is used in some medical screening procedures. I thought it would be cool to make a particle accelerator driven directly by a wind turbine. IE Wind turbine, differential, chains, and gears.
I was reading Something Wonderful Happened by Karen Hill at the time. I met a few of the people from Shine, a couple of them actually resemble characters from Real Genius.
